Nicknamed the “Silicon Valley of India,” Bengaluru is home to almost every one of the world’s top 25 semiconductor design companies, including AMD’s 500,000-square-foot Technostar research and development campus — the largest chip design hub in the country. With a reliable power supply and abundant natural mineral resources, Bengaluru is considered to be “the best place” for semiconductor development, according to experts.

Global semiconductor company Onsemi specializes in intelligent power and sensing technologies for automotive and industrial markets. The Arizona-based company manufactures more than 80,000 components, including advanced metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs), image sensors and its EliteSiC silicon carbide technology to address critical applications like vehicle electrification, sustainable energy grids and industrial automation. NXP designs and manufactures semiconductors, specializing in microcontrollers, chips and embedded systems for applications in areas like automotive, industrial and Internet-of-Things. Headquartered in the Netherlands, it employs more than 2,500 Indian engineers across four India-based offices, located in Noida, Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad. Founded in 2018, the company develops semiconductors that can be used for power management, memory storage and networking, as well as image and video processing. ChipLogic is headquartered in Bengaluru, with international offices located in the United Kingdom.

 

Micron Technology manufactures computer memory and data storage solutions such as memory cards, solid state drives and advanced computing systems. Founded in 1978 in the basement of a dental office, the Idaho-based company now operates in 17 countries. Of its 43,000 employees, 3,000 of them work at its delivery centers in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

 

Applied Materials supplies semiconductor manufacturing equipment, services and software to produce “virtually every new chip and advanced display in the world,” according to the company’s website. The California-based company operates six India offices. And in 2023, the company announced it would build a collaborative engineering center in Bengaluru that would create an additional 500 jobs, which will be accompanied by an India Validation Center.

 

AMD, a multinational semiconductor corporation, is expanding its presence in Bengaluru with a 500,000-square-foot design center expected to employ 3,000 engineers. The company, which develops processors, graphics cards and adaptive systems-on-chip circuits, plans to invest $400 million in research and engineering operations in India by 2028. AMD’s Bengaluru facility complements its existing offices in Delhi, Karnataka and other Indian cities, supporting advancements in AI and semiconductor technology.

Multinational company Texas Instruments designs and manufactures more than 80,000 products, including analog chips, embedded processors and digital signal processors. With 15 manufacturing facilities worldwide, the American company produces billions of semiconductors every year. Texas Instruments expanded its operations to India in 1985. Its research and development center in Bengaluru was the first of its kind for the city, paving the way for it to become a global R&D destination.

In Bengaluru, Microchip focuses on advancing semiconductor technologies for diverse applications, including aerospace, medical devices and consumer appliances.

 

Nvidia is one of the world’s top semiconductor companies, known for its cutting-edge graphics processing units, application programming interfaces and system-on-a-chip units. It’s also become a major supplier of artificial intelligence hardware and software. Founded in 1993, the company supports everything from massively parallel supercomputing systems used in data science and research centers to workstation applications in architecture, engineering and construction, automotive, gaming and industrial manufacturing.
