About Anyscale:
At Anyscale, we're on a mission to democratize distributed computing and make it accessible to software developers of all skill levels. We’re commercializing Ray, a popular open-source project that's creating an ecosystem of libraries for scalable machine learning. Companies like OpenAI, Uber, Spotify, Instacart, Cruise, and many more, have Ray in their tech stacks to accelerate the progress of AI applications out into the real world.
With Anyscale, we’re building the best place to run Ray, so that any developer or data scientist can scale an ML application from their laptop to the cluster without needing to be a distributed systems expert.
Proud to be backed by Andreessen Horowitz, NEA, and Addition with $250+ million raised to date.
About the role:
We’re looking for a Docs Engineering Lead to own the end-to-end systems, tooling, and infrastructure that power Anyscale’s documentation experience — including both the Anyscale product documentation and the open-source Ray documentation.
Documentation is one of the most important surfaces for how developers experience Anyscale. In this role, you will architect, build, and operate the platform that enables technical writers, engineers, and contributors across the company to produce clear, accurate, and high-quality content at scale. You’ll combine deep engineering skills with an obsession for information architecture, contributor experience, and technical content delivery.
This is a Lead IC role with high autonomy, broad visibility, and significant cross-functional influence. You’ll collaborate closely with technical writers (your primary internal customers), engineers, designers, product managers, and marketing to deliver a best-in-class docs experience.
What You’ll OwnEnd-to-end ownership of documentation tooling, build systems, and infrastructure for both Anyscale and Ray.
Architecture and implementation of the front-end documentation experience, including dynamic elements, UI components, and contributor workflows.
All developer-focused aspects of documentation hygiene: CLI/SDK reference generation, code example CI, versioning, testing, and automation pipelines.
Contributor experience tooling that enables technical writers and engineers to work efficiently, accurately, and confidently.
Documentation hosting, deployment strategy, CDN configuration, observability, analytics, and SEO fundamentals.
Technical implementation of AI-augmented documentation tooling in collaboration with internal AI/ML and product teams.
What You’ll Work OnBuild and maintain the full docs engineering stack using Python and JavaScript.
Implement dynamic components, automated documentation workflows, and extensions for Docusaurus (Anyscale docs) and tooling improvements around Sphinx (Ray OSS docs).
Design systems that generate dynamic CLI and SDK reference docs, pulling from code, schemas, or OpenAPI-like definitions.
Create custom plugins and tooling for authoring, validation, versioning, and content automation.
Develop tests and validation pipelines for code examples, tutorials, walkthroughs, and other executable content.
Define and enforce patterns, style guidelines, and branding across documentation surfaces, with collaboration from Design and Marketing.
Partner with AI/ML teams to explore or integrate chatbot assistants, generative content workflows, LLM-based quality checks, or other intelligent doc systems.
Improve documentation discoverability through analytics, structure, metadata, and lightweight SEO improvements.
Drive contributor UX across engineering, product, field teams, and the OSS Ray community — enabling fast, safe, and scalable content contributions.
Docs as a first-class product surface: You’ll shape a developer-facing experience that is critical to how users learn, adopt, and scale with Anyscale.
High leverage: By empowering contributors and writers, you multiply the productivity of the entire engineering organization.
Hybrid strategic + hands-on: You’ll set technical direction and architecture while also building systems end-to-end.
Cross-company visibility: Your work impacts product, DevEx, marketing, OSS, and the AI platform itself.
Freedom to innovate: Our Docusaurus-based system supports arbitrary JS integrations, enabling deep customization and experimentation.
Required SkillsStrong software engineering background with Python and JavaScript (both mandatory).
Experience building or maintaining documentation platforms, content engineering systems, or developer-facing web properties.
Familiarity with at least one major docs ecosystem: Docusaurus, Sphinx, MkDocs, Next.js/SSG, or similar.
Experience with CI/CD, build pipelines, deployment automation, and versioning systems.
Understanding of CDNs, caching strategy, hosting architectures, and doc site observability.
Experience integrating analytics tools (Google Analytics, Search Console, Pendo, etc.).
Strong grasp of information architecture and UX considerations for technical audiences (DevOps, ML engineers, data engineers, data scientists).
Ability to design contributor-friendly workflows and collaborate closely with technical writers.
Experience supporting or migrating large-scale documentation systems.
Experience building reusable components with React and CSS modules.
Familiarity with the Ray ecosystem, distributed computing, or AI/ML infrastructure.
Exposure to containerized development workflows (Docker) or Kubernetes.
Experience integrating or enabling AI-assisted documentation workflows.
Experience working on developer tools at a SaaS or enterprise technology company.
Contributions to open-source docs or content tooling.
You care deeply about documentation as a product, and you understand how much great docs impact developer adoption and success.
You are excited about shaping and delivering a best-in-class documentation experience — both for end users and for internal contributors.
You see technical writers as your core stakeholders and design systems that amplify their impact.
You have a product mindset, strong UX intuition, and an instinct for how developers learn.
You enjoy collaborating with technical and non-technical partners, and you thrive in highly cross-functional environments.
You take end-to-end ownership, from architecture to implementation to ongoing maintenance.
You’re comfortable working in a fast-moving environment with high autonomy and high expectations.
