Job Description
This role requires working from our local Hyderabad office 2-3x a week.
INTRODUCTION:
We are looking for a Java Backend Engineering Manager to join our team. In this role, you will lead the design and implementation of high-quality backend services, with a strong focus on Java, API development, and integration with Cloud technologies (AWS). You will be responsible for guiding and mentoring a team of engineers in building scalable, secure, and reliable solutions while managing complex backend systems in a microservices architecture. You will ensure the integration of modern technologies such as Kafka for event management, Docker & Kubernetes for containerization, and contribute to enhancing our platform’s backend capabilities. You will collaborate with product, design, and engineering leaders, while also acting as a strategic partner to define a roadmap for API architecture and backend systems. This role also requires driving innovation, promoting best practices in coding, security, and architecture, and enabling team members' career growth.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:

Lead a team of developers in the design, development, and deployment of scalable and secure backend systems and APIs, primarily using Java and Spring frameworks.

Guide the development of microservices architecture and manage integration with cloud platforms (AWS), event streaming systems (Kafka), and container orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes).

Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product, design, QA, business analysts, etc.) to define and deliver backend solutions that meet business needs.

Implement Domain Driven Design (DDD), Object-Oriented Design (OOD), and proven design patterns for building robust backend services.

Develop APIs and services for critical platforms such as Billing, Collections, and Payment Gateways within the fitness industry.

Support application deployment and system migrations to production, ensuring uptime and reliability.

Enforce secured coding practices and ensure all solutions are developed in compliance with industry standards and legal requirements.

Oversee quality assurance and integrate automated testing strategies to ensure high-quality code and system performance.

Facilitate scrum ceremonies, including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives to ensure development goals are met and bottlenecks are resolved.

Promote continuous learning and growth within the team through mentorship, coaching, and the development of career paths.

Drive technical innovation and integrate new technologies through Proof of Concepts and initiatives that enhance product functionality.

Be the escalation point for technical challenges and provide guidance on troubleshooting and debugging complex backend issues.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

Bachelor's degree in computer science or relevant field exp. preferred

A minimum of 7-10 years of relevant experience (less years required with advanced degrees), with at least 3-4 years of people management experience.

At least 4 years of Java development experience, including Spring framework and microservices development.

Extensive experience in designing and building RESTful APIs and SOAP web services.

Solid understanding of cloud-native development, with experience deploying applications on AWS or similar platforms.

Expertise in containerization and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).

Proven experience in implementing event-driven architecture and integrating with tools like Kafka.

Experience with Agile development methodologies and strong participation in scrum teams.

Security-first mindset, with knowledge of secure coding practices and application security protocols.

Strong analytical skills with the ability to debug complex issues and perform root cause analysis.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to articulate technical challenges and solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Ability to handle multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively in a dynamic environment.
