Norming Engineer (Technical Writer)

Key Responsibilities:

Management and coordination of standardization projects across TTT BorgWarner sites.

The Norming Engineer (Technical Writer) should be an expert in standards writing. He coordinates an internal BorgWarner standardization project in all working stages.

The tasks are:

•        Assist the requester with the BorgWarner Standard Request

•        Develop the standardization concept (e.g., one standard, multiple standards, a series of standards with multiple parts, other types of documents such as forms, templates, reports, process/work/design instructions)

•        Check plausibility. Review of applicable or relevant internal and external standard documents

•        Assign BorgWarner Standard number according to our internal rule book.

•        Log progress (e.g., update BWS Request Form, update tracking list, informing participants)

•        Editorially revise a manuscript provided by the requester (e.g., templates, format, check of technical standards)

•        Create a preliminary draft of the standard based on the requester’s manuscript

•        Obtaining missing information from the requester

•        Manage the project with the aim of achieving consensus (e.g., project schedule, organization and chairing of meetings, following up on work items)

•        Support and moderate the BorgWarner Standard Forum. The BorgWarner Standard Forum serves to foster technical discussion. In general, a discussion forum is opened for each standardization project after consensus has been reached among primary stakeholders

•        Administer BorgWarner Standard Approval Workflow

•        Release the approved BorgWarner Standard

Furthermore, the Norming Engineer (Technical Writer) ensures accessibility, and communication of technical standards across the organization. This role supports internal departments by maintaining the standards database, managing documentation updates, and providing expert guidance on standard-related topics.

Technical Documentation Management

•        Edit and verify updates to technical documentation related to engineering and corporate standards.

•        Ensure documentation complies with internal quality requirements and external regulations.

Standards Database Administration

•        Maintain and update the internal standards database.

•        Ensure data accuracy, version control, and user accessibility.

Change Communication

•        Inform relevant departments about updates or changes to standards.

Internal Advisory Services

•        Act as a subject matter expert for standards-related inquiries.

•        Support internal customers with interpretation, application, and compliance with standards.

Norming Engineer reports to: Team Leader Product Compliance, Standards, & Sustainability (ESPS)

Education & Experience

·        Technical apprenticeship or degree, preferably in mechanical engineering

·        Business fluent in spoken and written English

·        Expertise in standardization

·        Work experience (in standardization, design, quality management, manufacturing beneficial)  

·        Familiarity with ISO, DIN, or other relevant standards systems.

Strong proficiency in document control systems and database tools

Skills & Competencies

·        Outstanding MS Office skills

·        Ability to understand complex interrelations, logical thinking and ability to work independently are crucial prerequisites

·        Detail-Oriented: Ability to spot inconsistencies and ensure high-quality documentation.

·        Communication: Clear and professional communication with technical and non-technical audiences.

·        Analytical Thinking: Ability to assess the impact of standards changes and advise accordingly.

·        Collaboration: Works effectively across departments and with diverse teams.

·        Initiative: Takes ownership of tasks and proactively identifies areas for improvement.
