Overview: 

Toast is driven by building the all-in-one restaurant platform that helps restaurants operate their business, increase sales, engage guests, and keep employees happy. Our People Data Engineering Manager will focus on designing, building, and  maintaining our People Data Snowflake instance infrastructure, required for efficient data processing and analysis of our people data (e.g., headcount, turnover, performance management engagement). You will be responsible for tasks such as data ingestion and automating data pipelines, storage, transformation, and optimisation. You will also work closely with data scientists, data reporting analysts and other cross-functional teams to understand their data needs to design  scalable and reliable data solutions as well as implement data governance policies and data quality standards.


About this roll* (Responsibilities)

  • Design and execute ad-hoc SQL queries in Snowflake to address complex questions about people data

  • Design, implement, and optimize data architecture solutions for confidential data about Toast’s employees 

  • Data Ingestion and Transformation: Build and maintain data ingestion pipelines to extract data from various sources and transform it into usable formats.

  • Data Storage and Retrieval: Manage and optimize data storage solutions (e.g., relational databases, data lakes, or cloud-based storage systems), to ensure efficient data retrieval and analysis.

  • Data Quality: Build strategies to automate data accuracy; verify data accuracy after completion of requests to ensure data flows accurately

  • Collaboration and Documentation: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, data scientists, and data reporting analysis to understand data requirement; provide documentation for data infrastructure solutions and best practices.

  • Mentor, support and manage other team members


Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, data engineering, or a related field 

  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, infrastructure engineering, or related roles. 

  • Mastery level understanding of SQL and how it is applied to large data sources

  • Experience with database systems, system security and access control.

  • Experience handling sensitive and confidential data and working knowledge of applicable regulations related to personal data in Europe, the U.S. and India

  • Proficiency in programming languages like Python or Java, along with scripting skills for data pipeline  automation

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).

  • Understanding of data modeling principles and  the ability to design efficient data architectures and schemas.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in navigating and utilizing APIs 

  • Knowledge of data governance practices and familiarity with data privacy regulations

  • Advanced knowledge of and experience with using data warehouses, data lakes, data pipelines; Snowflake experience preferred. 

  • Understanding of software development best practices, including coding standards, code reviews, design patterns, source control management, and test automation.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage, coach, and support others

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
