This is an exciting opportunity to join Moderna’s Internal Audit and SOX compliance team at the heart of its global operations. As a Principal Accountant, you will lead the development and execution of a risk-based internal audit plan, ensuring best-in-class SOX compliance across all global financial and business activities. You’ll act with urgency to safeguard Moderna’s assets and collaborate across departments to enhance the internal control environment. This role demands ownership, agility, and a mindset of continuous improvement — with the long-term opportunity to pivot into other areas of Finance and Accounting within Moderna’s dynamic and growing business.
Here’s What You’ll Do:
Your key responsibilities will be:
Overseeing comprehensive SOX risk assessments in line with Section 404 and ICFR requirements
Managing the planning, execution, and documentation of SOX testing across business and select IT processes
Collaborating with external auditors and co-sourced SOX testing teams for aligned and efficient execution
Coordinating third-party providers for SOX testing, escalating issues promptly and ensuring timely resolution
Driving annual and quarterly SOX audit procedures across global operations
Building strong partnerships with control owners to ensure timely testing, certification, and issue resolution
Supporting implementation and tracking of remediation plans, including root cause analysis
Maintaining the centralized SOX compliance solution and documentation repository
Your responsibilities will also include:
Providing SOX training and support to process owners, ensuring documentation is current and compliant
Collaborating with Digital teams to explore opportunities for automating internal controls
Supporting internal audit and enterprise risk management (ERM) initiatives as needed
Identifying gaps in controls and leading efforts to strengthen the company’s internal control environment
Driving continuous improvement in audit and compliance processes, ensuring both agility and long-term impact
Remaining open to future rotation into broader Finance and Accounting functions, depending on business needs
Engaging with emerging tools and platforms, including opportunities to explore applications of Generative AI in audit and compliance processes

Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications):
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
5-8+ years of experience in internal audit, SOX compliance, financial reporting, or a related field, with a proven record in audit roles
Experience in a Big Four public accounting firm or similar audit/compliance role within the biotech/pharma industry
Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), preferred
Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, COSO framework, and global financial reporting standards
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and build relationships at all organizational levels
