Role Overview
Nasuni’s Cloud Services team builds and operates UniFS-as-a-Service and related cloud-native offerings deployed across AWS and Azure environments. These services power enterprise-scale storage workflows in both customer-managed and Nasuni-hosted SaaS environments.
As a Principal Software Engineer, you will own the design and delivery of high-scale, highly available, cloud-native services. This role is for engineers who combine strong distributed systems expertise with hands-on execution and technical leadership. You will influence architecture, guide engineering standards, and lead complex feature initiatives from design through production.
This role is not a pure coding role, nor a people management position. It is a high-autonomy individual contributor role with broad technical influence.
Level & Scope Definition
In this role, you will:
- Own architecture and implementation of major service components within UniFS-as-a-Service.
- Lead multi-developer feature initiatives without direct reports.
- Make technical decisions that impact system reliability, scalability, and security.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, QA, Support, and Documentation.
- Mentor engineers on design quality, production readiness, and cloud best practices.
- Drive improvements in CI/CD, observability, and operational excellence.
- Participate in root cause analysis and implement preventative measures for critical incidents.
You will operate with high autonomy and are expected to identify problems, propose solutions, and execute without detailed direction.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement cloud-native services using AWS and Azure serverless technologies.
- Lead architectural discussions and translate requirements into scalable technical designs.
- Develop production-grade Python services using FastAPI and Pydantic.
- Integrate with AWS (Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, SQS, Kinesis) and Azure (Container Apps, Blob Storage, CosmosDB, Service Bus, Event Hub).
- Author automated tests using pytest or equivalent frameworks.
- Contribute to and improve CI/CD pipelines and containerized deployment workflows using Docker.
- Implement infrastructure as code using AWS CDK and/or Azure Bicep.
- Ensure internet-facing services meet modern security, reliability, and observability standards.
- Lead production incident response, root cause analysis, and long-term reliability improvements.
- Provide technical mentorship and elevate engineering quality within the team.
Qualifications
Must-Have Qualifications
- 9+ years of professional software development experience.
- 7+ years of production Python development.
- Demonstrated experience designing and operating distributed, cloud-based systems in AWS or Azure.
- Hands-on experience building serverless or container-based cloud services.
- Experience integrating with cloud SDKs (e.g., boto3 or azure-sdk-for-python).
- Experience building RESTful services using modern Python frameworks (e.g., FastAPI).
- Experience writing automated tests in production environments (e.g., pytest).
- Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and containerized deployments (Docker).
- Strong understanding of reliability, observability, and security best practices for internet-facing systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working across both AWS and Azure environments.
- Experience with infrastructure as code (CDK, Bicep, Terraform, etc.).
- Experience designing multi-tenant SaaS systems.
- Experience in storage systems or large-scale data platforms.
- AWS or Azure certifications.
Ideal Qualifications
- Proven track record leading architecture for services handling high-throughput or large-scale enterprise workloads.
- Experience operating globally distributed systems.
- Strong incident management and postmortem leadership experience.
Experience Guidelines
- 9–12 years total software engineering experience.
- 7+ years in production Python systems.
- 3+ years designing distributed cloud-native services.
