Title And Summary
The Senior Database Engineer is responsible for both database build and support functions. This individual will lead large initiatives, be responsible for gathering requirements through feature requests from our development partners, perform analysis and implementation of database designs, provide consulting, and drive the best practice, governance, and standards of Database Engineering in Mastercard. This role involves fostering strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and managing both the operational and strategic initiatives of the team. All About You• 5 - 9 Years of Overall Career experience handling Postgres Database (On-Prem and Cloud)• Knowledge of Cassandra, Redis and Oracle is added advantage.• Ability to work on database setup of public cloud (like AWS and Azure).• Responsible for installation, configuration, applying patching, DB upgrades, object creations and administration of Postgres databases.• Implement proactive monitoring and observability dashboards of all databases to predict and diagnose the majority of problems before they impact application performance or user experience. Create dashboard and configure alerts on Splunk, Dynatrace, and PEM.• Configure and manage Postgres Installation, replication, upgrades, applying minor patching activities.• Good problem solving and troubleshooting skills.• Manage user access and security: Set up user accounts and ensure database security protocols are followed.• Backup and recovery: Implement backup and recovery plans to protect data against loss.• Undertake periodic upgrades of database schema and perform testing and verification of released database schema upgrades.• Support the installation and configuration of Databases for high availability.• Work on maintaining database security (roles, privileges, authentication)• Work with auditors (ISA and QSA) to support internal and external audits (like PCI). • Create and maintain documentation, procedures and best practice guides for database deployment and maintenance• Uses strong writing and verbal communication skills to build awareness and to proactively promote DBA's position in support of sound database structures, data governance and other Corporate strategies. • Displays excellent collaborative skills with cross-functional teams.• Provide positive customer service to internal business partners.• Ability to multi-task and prioritize efforts.• Ability to pick up new technologies at a quick pace.• Ability to work with team members located in multiple geographies.• Researches and implements modern technologies to enhance/grow existing database infrastructure and performs proof-of-concept research on behalf of Database Engineering.• Create and deliver presentations for internal learning, training events, and/or business discussions with strategic partnership that is tailored to the audience.• Drive intellectual property development and use for projects, team, and Database Engineering.• Highly Skilled in identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving complex technical challenges or operational issues across Mastercard.
Education (preferred)• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information systems or equivalent experience.
Skills :• Requires related experience in the design, maintenance, and administration of Postgres (Open Source, EDB and AWS Aurora).• Highly knowledgeable of Postgres architecture and Internals for all Postgres flavors (EBD and AWS Aurora).• Proficient with Postgresql installation and configuration, particularly Postgresql Plus Advanced Server from EnterpriseDB• Observability and Monitoring - Proficient with Postgresql monitoring and alerting tools/processes specifically PEM from EnterpriseDB. Performance and DB insights ,cloudwatch for AWS. Knowledge of Splunk, Dynatrace and similar tools.• Experience in Postgres replication technologies. Proficient in setup, configuration and monitoring of Postgresql binary and logical data replication solutions (Binary Streaming, XDB and Bi-Directional Replication - BDR)• Proficient with collecting diagnostics and tuning Postgresql as well as SQL tuning• Proficient with Postgresql procedural languages (PL/pgSQL, PL/Tcl, PL/Perl, PL/Python) and SQL• Working knowledge of AWS Aurora. Install and configure Amazon Aurora instances.• Enforce database security policies including IAM roles, encryption, and auditing.• Set up proactive monitoring using CloudWatch, Performance Insights, and custom alerts.• Excellent troubleshooting skills.• Perform debugging, tuning and performance enhancement as well as automation of operational and continuous integration aspect of the Postgres platforms. Can run EXPLAIN and do access path optimization. • Proficient with collecting diagnostics and tuning Postgres as well as SQL tuning• Proficient with the Linux operating system, specifically Oracle Linux Enterprise.• Implement and manage database version control using tools like Flyway.• Use AWS services like CloudFormation, Lambda, and CloudWatch for orchestration. • Integrate database operations with CI/CD pipelines using tools like Bitbucket, Github, Jenkins, XLR, CloudFormation, Terraform, and AWS Lambda.• Working knowledge of Data Modeling.• Strong knowledge of linux/unix environment. Working knowledge of scripting languages, Bash, ksh, perl etc.• Knowledge of ITSM process and tools (like Remedy).• Knowledge of other cloud-native and NoSQL database technologies, such Cassandra, and Redis is a bonus.• Uses strong verbal and written communication skills to build awareness and to proactively promote DBA's position in support of sound database structures, data governance and other Corporate strategies.
