About the role
At slice, we are building the next generation of financial platforms and applications in payments. We are looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead backend engineering teams, drive technical and execution excellence, and build strong engineering leadership within the organisation.
In this role, you will work closely with Product, Business, and Technology leaders to translate business goals into engineering outcomes. You will manage and mentor Engineering Managers, help them build high-performing teams, and ensure the delivery of scalable, reliable, and high-quality systems.
We are looking for an experienced engineering leader who can operate independently, develop future leaders, and balance technical depth with people leadership and business impact.
What You will do
Lead engineering teams through managers: Manage and mentor Engineering Managers, helping them improve team performance, technical decision-making, execution, and people management.
Drive engineering execution: Own engineering roadmaps, delivery commitments, and execution across multiple teams, ensuring alignment with product priorities and business goals.
Build scalable backend systems: Guide teams in designing and delivering reliable, secure, and scalable backend services and financial platforms.
Strengthen technical excellence: Establish high standards for system design, architecture, code quality, testing, operational readiness, and engineering practices.
Develop engineering leaders: Coach Engineering Managers on team building, performance management, career development, conflict resolution, and stakeholder management.
Drive cross-functional alignment: Partner with Product, Business, and other Technology teams to prioritise initiatives, manage dependencies, and deliver business outcomes.
Build high-performing teams: Drive hiring, talent development, succession planning, and retention while creating an environment of accountability and continuous learning.
Improve engineering effectiveness: Identify opportunities to improve development processes, productivity, release practices, system reliability, and overall engineering efficiency.
Own operational excellence: Ensure teams build and operate production systems with a strong focus on reliability, incident management, observability, and continuous improvement.
Drive organisational impact: Identify systemic challenges across teams, make informed trade-offs, and introduce practices that improve engineering outcomes at scale.
What You will need
11–14 years of overall experience in software engineering, with 4–5 years in engineering management.
Experience leading engineering teams, ideally with 2.5+ years in a Senior Engineering Manager role. Candidates with at least 1 year of relevant senior-level leadership experience may also be considered.
At least 1 year of experience managing Engineering Managers, including involvement in performance reviews and appraisal cycles.
Strong understanding of backend architecture, distributed systems, system design, scalability, and modern software engineering practices.
Proven experience delivering complex, business-critical platforms in a fast-paced product engineering environment.
Experience managing multiple teams, driving execution across dependencies, and balancing technical quality with business priorities.
Demonstrated ability to coach Engineering Managers, develop leadership capability, and build high-performing engineering organisations.
Strong stakeholder management, communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
Experience with fintech, banking, payments, or other regulated technology environments is preferred but not mandatory.
