Working at Atlassian
Atlassians can choose where they work-whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually as part of being a distributed-first company.
About ITSM Team
IT Service Management (ITSM) is one of the fastest growing products of Atlassian. Through this solution, we are helping technical and non-technical teams centralize and streamline service requests, respond to incidents, collect and maintain knowledge, manage assets and configuration items, and more. Specifically, this ITSM team uses cutting-edge AI and machine learning algorithms to automate IT operational tasks, troubleshoot problems, and reduce mental overload for oncall engineers and alike. By weaving Generative AI into our product, we revolutionize AIOps by moving from a traditional reactive troubleshooting-based system to a proactive problem-solving approach. Our AI models are designed to evolve through continuous learning, which makes them more robust, accurate, and resilient.
What you will do
As a Sr. Engineering Manager on the ITSM team, you will be able to work on ML algorithms and build data pipelines that power them. Your work will help modernize IT Operations by reducing MTTR (mean time to resolve) and MTTI ( Mean time to identify). You will use your software development expertise to solve difficult problems, tackling complex infrastructure and architecture challenges.
You can lead engineers in driving involved projects from technical design to launch. You will also collaborate with other teams and internal customers to set expectations, gather input, and communicate results.
In this role, you'll get the chance to:

  • Shape the future of AIOps: Be at the forefront of innovation, shaping the next generation of AI-powered operations tools that predict, prevent, and resolve IT issues before they impact our customers
  • Learn ML on the job: Hone your skills in both supervised and unsupervised learning along with Data Science and MLOps engineers. Delve into the world of generative models, exploring their potential to detect anomalies, automate responses, and personalize remediation plans
  • Be responsible for high-quality, predictable software delivery. You will be collaborating with diverse minds: A brilliant team of BE engineers, data scientists, and MLOps engineers, cross-pollinating ideas and learning from each other's expertise
  • Make a tangible impact: Your work will directly influence the reliability and performance of Atlassian's critical software, driving customer satisfaction and propelling our business forward.
  • Routinely tackle complex architectural challenges, spar with other principal engineers to build ML pipelines and models that scale for thousands of customers
  • Further hone leadership skills: You'll be able to mentor engineers, guide projects, and partner across engineering teams to take on company-wide initiatives spanning multiple projects. This is a highly high-visibility role and you will be presenting to senior leadership routinely, You will work on multi year strategy, and evolve a roadmap
  • You will also identify blockers, goals, success metrics ensuring awareness, and OKR/roadmap awareness. All leading to a predictable delivery pipeline
  • Manage a growing team of Tech Leads and Software Engineers

Our tech stack is primarily Python/Java/Kotlin, built on AWS.
On your first day, we'll expect you to have

  • Being comfortable with a front-line manager role, managing 10-15 engineers across crafts like Backend, Frontend, Data Science, and MLOps. Ideally, you have 5+ years of experience managing engineering teams including principal engineers
  • Understanding of SaaS, PaaS, IaaS industry with hands-on experience with public cloud offerings (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure). You should be able to contribute to architectural discussions
  • Solid understanding of what it means for an engineer to be oncall, alert triaging, and incident management
  • Knowledge to evaluate trade-offs between correctness, robustness, performance and general operational excellence. You are building a brand-new product, and gauging the right investment is crucial

If you've got these skills, even better:

  • Awareness of machine learning concepts and algorithms, including supervised and unsupervised learning, deep learning, and NLP
  • Experience in architecting and implementing high-performance RESTful microservices ( API development for ML Models )
  • Familiarity with MLOps and experience with scaling and deploying Machine Learning models (MLflow, Tecton, Pinecone, Feature Stores)
  • Experience with using OpenAI LLM
