Software Development Engineer - II | Backend

SpotDraft is on a mission to help legal and business teams move faster, together. Our AI-powered contracting platform is redefining how companies manage contracts, and our story deserves to be told in creative, human, and memorable ways.

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help architect, build, and scale the core systems powering SpotDraft’s platform. In this role, you’ll lead the development of reliable backend services, scalable APIs, and distributed systems that support our rapidly growing product and customer base.

You’ll work closely with Product, Engineering, and AI teams to drive high-impact initiatives, improve platform performance and reliability, and contribute to key architectural and engineering decisions across the platform.

The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in backend development, distributed systems, and scalable application design, preferably within fast-paced B2B product or SaaS environments. We’re looking for engineers with 4–7 years of experience who can take end-to-end ownership, solve complex technical challenges, and help scale both systems and engineering practices at SpotDraft.

• Design and build scalable backend systems with a strong focus on reliability and performance

• Contribute to architectural decisions and influence system design across services

• Own end-to-end system design including HLDs and LLDs

• Make thoughtful trade-offs balancing speed, scalability, and maintainability

• Work closely with Product, Design, and other engineering teams to ship impactful features

• Translate ambiguous product requirements into clear technical solutions

• Participate in cross-functional discussions and influence product direction

• Own features and systems end-to-end—from ideation to production and beyond

• Build systems from scratch and evolve them as they scale

• Take accountability for reliability, performance, and uptime of owned systems

• Demonstrate strong ownership and autonomy in driving outcomes

• Build with a deep understanding of the end user and customer problems

• Understand adoption, usage patterns, and retention of features you build

• Be able to articulate why something was built, for whom, and its impact

• Contribute to hiring by participating in interviews and candidate evaluation

• Mentor junior engineers and raise the overall engineering bar

• Bring a strong “builder’s mindset” with a bias for action and problem-solving

• 4–7 years of experience in backend/software engineering

• Strong computer science fundamentals (or equivalent practical experience)

• Proven experience designing and building scalable backend systems

• Hands-on experience with system design (HLD & LLD)

• Demonstrated involvement or influence in architectural decisions

• Experience working in cross-functional teams (Product, Design, etc.)

• Strong communication skills and ability to work in collaborative environments

• Track record of ownership—building, scaling, and maintaining systems

• Comfortable working across tech stacks (tech stack agnostic mindset)

• Prior experience in startup environments or fast-paced teams
