Requisition Number: 2367493
Optum is a global organization that delivers care, aided by technology to help millions of people live healthier lives. The work you do with our team will directly improve health outcomes by connecting people with the care, pharmacy benefits, data and resources they need to feel their best. Here, you will find a culture guided by inclusion, talented peers, comprehensive benefits and career development opportunities. Come make an impact on the communities we serve as you help us advance health optimization on a global scale. Join us to start Caring. Connecting. Growing together.
Own end-to-end design for a defined product area within Optum Insight. You will take ambiguous but scoped problems and ship experiences that are usable, coherent and tied to clear outcomes. You will set the quality bar within your product area and help raise the craft, clarity and confidence of the designers around you.
In this role, you will design enterprise health care experiences where clarity matters. The workflows may span data exploration, population insights, value-based care, reporting, configuration, payment accuracy, clinical intelligence or operational decision-making. You will work with product managers, engineers, researchers and business partners to understand the job to be done, define success, design the right interaction model and support delivery through launch and learning.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead design for a product area or connected set of workflows, from discovery through shipped and instrumented experiences
  • Frame problems before solving them by clarifying the job to be done, defining success measures and pressure-testing scope with Product and Engineering
  • Create the full range of design artifacts, including journey maps, flows, information architecture, interaction models, prototypes, annotations and delivery-ready specifications
  • Translate complex health care, data and business workflows into simple, usable experiences that help users make decisions with confidence
  • Drive design decisions to resolution, document the rationale and make trade-offs visible to partners
  • Use and extend the enterprise design system; establish reusable patterns within the product area rather than one-off solutions
  • Partner with research and analytics teams to learn from users, validate assumptions and connect design work to measurable outcomes
  • Mentor mid-level and junior designers through critique, pairing and practical guidance on craft, systems thinking and stakeholder communication
  • Comply with the terms and conditions of the employment contract, company policies and procedures, and any and all directives (such as, but not limited to, transfer and/or re-assignment to different work locations, change in teams and/or work shifts, policies in regards to flexibility of work benefits and/or work environment, alternative work arrangements, and other decisions that may arise due to the changing business environment). The Company may adopt, vary or rescind these policies and directives in its absolute discretion and without any limitation (implied or otherwise) on its ability to do so

Scope and influence
You will own a defined product area and operate independently within it. Your influence will run across your squad and immediate cross-functional partners. You will contribute to design strategy and be trusted to translate it into shipped work without close oversight.
Required Qualifications:
  • Graduate Degree
  • 8+ years of experience designing complex digital products, including enterprise, data-heavy or workflow-intensive experiences
  • Experience working with a mature design system and the discipline to use, adapt and extend patterns responsibly
  • A practical understanding of accessibility, usability and inclusive design principles for enterprise software
  • A portfolio that shows systems thinking, not only polished screens. It should explain how you structured a problem, the trade-offs you made, how you collaborated and what changed because of the work
  • Comfort working with product managers, engineers, researchers, data experts and business stakeholders in agile delivery environments
  • Comfort with ambiguity inside a scoped problem, including the ability to identify what must be decided now and what can be learned later
  • Proven solid interaction design, information architecture and prototyping skills, with the ability to move from ambiguous requirements to clear product decisions
  • Proven ability to write clearly and make design decisions defensible to a cold reader through concise rationale, annotations and decision records

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience designing health care, payer, provider, life sciences, analytics, reporting, revenue cycle, payment integrity, care management or value-based care products
  • Experience designing for complex data workflows, including filtering, cohort creation, recommendations, rules, configuration, dashboards or decision support
  • Experience improving design quality across a squad through reusable patterns, critique rituals or practical design standards
  • AI-assisted prototyping fluency using enterprise-approved tools, including natural-language prompts to create or evaluate working prototypes
  • Exposure to user research, instrumentation, product analytics or post-launch measurement of design impact

What good looks like
  • Your product area ships on a predictable cadence with measurable improvements in task completion, error reduction, adoption, satisfaction or time saved
  • Design decisions are clear, documented and easier for Product and Engineering partners to act on
  • Other designers reuse the patterns, flows or standards you establish
  • Product managers and engineers bring you into problem framing early, not only execution late
  • Users experience complex health care workflows as simpler, more consistent and more trustworthy

Additional information

At UnitedHealth Group, our mission is to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone. We believe everyone-of every race, gender, sexuality, age, location and income-deserves the opportunity to live their healthiest life. Today, however, there are still far too many barriers to good health which are disproportionately experienced by people of color, historically marginalized groups and those with lower incomes. We are committed to mitigating our impact on the environment and enabling and delivering equitable care that addresses health disparities and improves health outcomes - an enterprise priority reflected in our mission.
