Variable Cost Productivity Lead Design Engineer - Mechanical
Job Description SummaryBe part of team which is dedicated to making healthcare more affordable & accessible to all. This role will be aligned with Variable Cost Productivity Centre of Excellence (VCP-COE) to bring down the cost of the product and enhance EBIT for business. Role involves collaborating on value engineering, transferring parts from HCC to BCC, performing verification/ validation activities and part qualifications. Assisting suppliers in achieving quality standards, managing supplier performance, and conducting audits. Key tasks include material analysis, obsolescence management, failure analysis, design for cost, and ensuring compliance with regulations.

Job DescriptionRoles & Responsibilities

Serve as technical resource for driving material cost reduction through design changes, supplier transfers, or should cost analyses that drive lower negotiated supplier pricing.

Support development of new cost reduction concepts and associated business case details for Imaging Modality VCP Leads.

Execute with limited guidance the design, development, analysis, and evaluation of assigned VCP projects that meet business standards, practices and procedures and the associated product / program requirements. Demonstrate a level of functional expertise necessary to influence and execute technical and project delivery execution.

Develop action plans to anticipate and respond to project risks.

Work from product specifications and requirements to develop component and assembly geometry, specify materials, and establish acceptable performance standards. Perform complex calculations, analyses, and testing to verify assumptions.

Support and coordinate with cross-functional VCP teams.

Provide timely communication and recommendations on significant issues or developments.

Be responsible for defining, estimating, leading and coordinating work or projects within functional area(s) of expertise.

Participate and present in technical and program reviews.

Document technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures.

Prepare invention disclosures to protect the technology that provides a competitive advantage to the business.

Assist in establishing/implementing overall VCP team goals, metrics, capturing of lessons-learned, and developing robust VCP processes and practices.

Leverage knowledge in advanced aspects of technical/functional areas. Apply technical theory and practical experience with input from relevant functional areas to solve complex problems.

Work with modality subject matter experts to ensure project deliverables are consistent with the goals of larger programs or initiatives.

Support mentoring of junior technical talent.

Accountable for implementing and teaching engineering standards to junior talent and peers.

Collaborate with Quality to implement controls for appropriate critical to quality (CTQ) characteristics

Prepare using 2D and 3D CAD software mechanical drawings, structural analysis, thermodynamic analysis, detailed drawings and assembly models complete with calculated dimensions and tolerances.

Revise and alter detailed and layout drawings and associated models to conform to engineering changes.

Prepare engineering change requests, engineering change notices, bills of material, and engineering specifications.

Direct the construction and testing of prototype and pilot design samples and conduct analysis of the test results.

Interface directly with manufacturing employees to clarify questions on drawings and designs.

Direct project workloads for drafters, designers, and engineers, as appropriate.

Maintain and develop competence required for the job.
Required Qualifications

Master’s/bachelor’s in mechanical engineering & master's degree in mechanical design / Tool Design / Manufacturing Engineering.

Strong technical experience with 6+ years in Mechanical designing with CAD/CAM.

Strong exposure in Composite commodities in Supplier Quality and development. Quality mindset required.

Technical Knowledge: In-depth understanding of current and emerging technologies.

Manage supplier development including assisting key suppliers towards QA. Support suppliers in reaching optimum quality and industrial standards of excellence.

Supplier development, Part development as per project timelines meeting quality requirements in strong collaboration with Sourcing, Engineering Manufacturing team.

Developing in-depth knowledge of a discipline. Uses prior experience and acquired expertise to execute functional policy/strategy.

Impacts projects, processes and procedures in own field. The role operates with some autonomy but is focused on execution of activities/provision of advice within an enabling discipline covered by standard functional practices and procedures. Activities require professional judgment but may require more senior levels of guidance.

Utilizes technical expertise and judgement to solve problems. Leverages technical skills and analytic thinking required to solve problems. May use multiple internal sources outside of own team to arrive at decisions.

Quality and Compliance: Adherence to GEHC Quality Manual, Quality Management System, and relevant regulations. Complete Quality & Compliance training within deadlines. Proactively identify and report quality concerns, with immediate corrective action. Support regulatory and quality compliance before completing design outputs. Participate in continuous improvement activities to address process and product quality gaps.
