We are seeking experienced SAR Commanders on a fixed term basis with experience, energy and motivation to work to positively impact our business. Individuals will need to be able to adapt to changes in the workplace and be committed to the successful transition of this contract and safe delivery of operations.

The role will be for the Irish Search & Rescue Transition Team, supporting the operation across all four bases within Ireland – Shannon, Sligo, Waterford and Weston until the transition phase is complete. The position will require the candidate to be flexible to travel within Ireland to support the different base operations.

Job description:

SAR Commanders Authority: 

  • The SAR Commander, under ICAO definition, “has the final authority and responsibility for the operation and safety of a flight”. His word is therefore final as to whether a SAR Operational Flight is dispatched; 
  • Make correct decisions when flying as part of a crew in accordance with CRM training and laid down instructions and regulations;
  • Understand all dispensations and alleviations and apply them at the appropriate times.   

Tasks:

  • Pilot / Command aircraft to Company standards on all missions; 
  • Carry out SAR, HEMS, Aerial Work and CAT flights as required by the company in accordance with limitations laid down in the Operations Manual; 
  • Conduct winching serials from land, vessels or water by day and night utilising aids such as NVIS;
  • Ability to land in Confined areas and at unprepared sites. 

Attributes:

  • Ability to skilfully pilot aircraft in accordance with Bristow Ireland; Standard Operating Procedures in a safe and professional manner 
  • Good Communication skills ;
  • Thorough knowledge of Aircraft technical characteristics; 
  • Ability to co-ordinate Search and Rescue activities in a multi asset environment; 
  • Ability to remain calm and adaptable in rapidly changing circumstances. 

Publications:

The SAR Commander must maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the following publications and documents and carry out his duties in the air and on the ground in accordance with the provisions therein: 

The Bristow Ireland Operations Manual suite:

  • IAA Aeronautical Notices 
  • ICAO IAMSAR Manual Volume 1-3;
  • ICAO Annex 12; 
  • Operating Procedures. 
  • Operations Circulars; 
  • The Aircraft Rotor Flight Manual; 
  • The Aircrew to Read Information; 
  • Publications and NOTAMS, Information Circulars; 
  • Supplementary Bulletins; 
  • Bristow Ireland ITAR compliance.    

Flying and Duty Periods: 

  • The SAR Commander shall maintain accurate records of flying and duty periods so as to ensure that limitations stated in the operations manual are not exceeded. 

Qualifications:

  • Must hold a valid EASA ATPL(H) including multi engine instrument rating; 
  • AW189 Type Rating Desirable (training available)
  • EASA Class 1 medical certificate pertaining to a Part – FCL Licence; 
  • Degree-level or appropriate operational experience. 

Experience:

  • 3 years SAR command experience;
  • 2500hrs helicopters flying hours of which 1000hrs must be multi-engine; 
  • 500hrs dedicated SAR flying experience in a similar operational environment; 
  • Evidenced NVIS and mountain experience; 
  • HEMS experience (desirable);
  • Strong understanding of the regulatory framework; 
  • Knowledge of Helicopter aviation and EASA flight regulations and procedures.

Skills:

  • Computer literate; 
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills; 
  • Good analytical skills.
  • CRM
