Qualcomm, a U.S. chipmaker with a significant presence in Bengaluru, has agreed to acquire Alphawave, a designer of semiconductor tech for data centers. The deal, worth $2.4 billion, is part of the company’s strategic push into the artificial intelligence data center market.

According to reporting by The Business Times, Qualcomm is looking to diversify its business and reduce reliance on the smartphone industry. As the iPhone increasingly relies on in-house processors, Qualcomm has been shifting focus toward other sectors, including data centers and personal computers.

Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm, told The Business Times that the company has developed high-speed wired connectivity and compute technologies designed to complement its power-efficient central processing units and neural processing unit cores, key components in AI-driven data center infrastructure.
